Sony Confirm PlayStation 5 Name and Release Date
| 2019-10-08

Seemingly out of nowhere, Sony have today released a heap of important information regarding their next gen system! As well all expected, their next console will be called the PlayStation 5. The PS5 also now has a release window of Holiday 2020 which is once again, pretty much what we expected. Sony also gave us a few smaller pieces of info regarding their next gen controller which sounds like it could really change how we game. We only got details on two innovations however, and article from Wired discusses a few more which I will come to in a second. Firstly then, the new controller will have Haptic feedback as opposed to a traditional rumble motor which will allow for much more precise rumble/feedback/ I’m a big fan of haptics and it sounds like this tech could make games feel very different from each other. The second change comes in the form of Adaptive Triggers which allows developers to adjust the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of different weapons or driving across rocky terrain. These both actually sound pretty sweet although, it does make me wonder how expensive these controllers are going to be as this seems to be some pretty cool tech which could firstly make the controller more fragile and secondly, put the price up!

Wired have an exclusive article which contains a sliver of extra information on the PS5 and you can read it here. I'm going to break it down somewhat and discuss the key points. Firstly, they discuss the importance of that new SSD which does sound like it will completely change our gaming experience. PlayStation have aimed to obviously increase read and write speeds but also, allow us players more control over what we install and remove. Apparently, we will be able to choose what sections of a game we install so if you don’t want to play a COD campaign for example, you just don’t have to install it. That sounds fantastic to me as I have a load of games with elements that I don’t play just sitting there on my PS4. Moving on then, Mark Cerny stated that the PS5 will have a new user interface which provides the player with a lot more information before booting a game. We will be able to see what matches we could join for a multiplayer game or even track which missions we need to complete and see what trophies we would earn for doing so from the PlayStation home screen. This sounds awesome and it won’t affect the speed at which the system boots into games which is apparently “fairly fast”.

The final point that Wired covered came in the form of the actual PS5 Dev Kit they were playing on. The system reportedly looks a lot like the one pictured below which has a very futuristic and ventilated design. I'm not too keen on the look but obviously, this is just a dev kit and actual production system probably wont look anything like this. Either way thought, it’s still cool to see what the system looks like at this stage! Check out the image below:

So, there we go, a decent slab of PS5 news! Sony did mention that we will get more information soon and that they have games in the works for the next system so as soon as we hear about those, we will have an article online pronto for you guys. Let me know what you think of this information down in the comments below, are you hyped for next gen? Make sure to keep it ShopTo for all the latest gaming news, reviews, competitions and more!

Sony have stated that they are still working on Backwards compatibility, and investigating full compatibility. If the PS5 is fully backwards compatible with the PS4, then I will be getting it day one, otherwise I will probably wait, even if it is partially backwards compatible, unless there are loads of new games I want only playable on PS5, but after PS4 I doubt that will be the case for 1-2 years after release. Although if the PS5 gets KOTOR remastered or KOTOR 3 then would get one. I am looking to play PS4 games better and hopefully have a quiter console, which the Pro is really noisy when it gets going. I don\'t think Sony intended for the Pro to be a 4K games console, until Microsoft announced Scorpio, the devs tried to get most of the Pro to match the X and so the Pro became overworked. I will not be getting the new Xbox day one whether it is backwards compatible or not, but they said it would be, as I only got the X less than a year ago, and is too soon for another new Xbox, unless there are loads of games that I would like to play that is not playable on the X.
