Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 Private Beta Initial Thoughts
| 2019-02-09

Having loved the first game, I came into The Division 2’s Private Beta very excited to see what has changed and just to have some more Division content to play! The Beta is running this weekend and allows players who have pre ordered the game to experience a slice of what’s to come when the full game launches next month. My code came in a few hours after the Beta went live and I wasted no time beginning the download of the monstrous 50GB file which has also had an update which took surprisingly long to install on top of that. Anyway, what did I think of my time with The Division 2’s private beta? Lets find out

My very first experience when booting up the game was waiting in a queue to get playing, thankfully, this queue only lasted a minute or so. The next stage saw my PS4 head into orbit as the fans reached a level of noise I haven’t experienced before, once again though thankfully, this sorted itself out when I got into playing. The games intro sequence is really slick and gives the player an outline of previous events. Seen as the story isn’t really the main focus of the game, new player can easily enter the series at this point and thanks to that intro, they’ll have a decent idea as to what’s going on. Looking at gameplay then, it looks and feels a lot like the first game which is a good thing as I really liked the original games vibe. Its set in Washington DC and Ubisoft waste no time with getting you to the Whitehouse as it’s actually the main base of operations. The world is decent from what I've seen and it feels a little less claustrophobic than its predecessor as there are less tall buildings to trap you in. Gunplay is still solid and the innovative cover system returns making combat feel very tactical and fun. My only real gripe is the framerate. The game plays below 60 FPS and I know its not the end of the world but I cant help but think that the game would play much better at a higher FPS, maybe ill try it out on PC when it comes to reviewing and see whether it makes much difference. Overall then, I was impressed with what I experienced and it seems to tick pretty much all of the boxes. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Washington when the game launches on March 15th for PS4 and Xbox One.
