Wolfenstein Youngblood Review
| 2019-08-02

The month if July wasn’t the greatest for gaming as we didn’t get any real major release until the last week or so where we got several big games. One of those was the game in question today, Wolfenstein Youngblood which I was very excited to play. As I stated in my initial thoughts, I have played all three modern Wolfenstein games and I've loved all three of them, especially on PC which is the platform that I have been playing Youngblood on. So then, loving the series and co-op/multiplayer games, this new spin off should be a perfect fit for me, but was it? Let’s find out.

Youngblood feels a lot like the previous three Wolfenstein games and this is a good thing because those games have some of the most unique and fun shooting mechanics alongside some of the best action scenes I have ever witnessed. The visuals remain unchanged from The New Colossus and a lot of the weapons you’ll find will either feel familiar or will have appeared in the previous games. Core mechanics are roughly the same with health packs and armour being dotted around and loot able from enemies. I love how these mechanics function as it means you can play extremely quickly and couple this with the fact that the game is co-op, it makes it a truly epic shooting experience, more on co-op later. The game flows so, so well and I can’t speak for console but on PC, it really is an experience that every shooter fan should have.

Story wise, Youngblood follows on from the events of New Colossus and sees BJ’s twin daughters take over their fathers role and combat the nazi’s. From what I've seen, the story appears to be alright. The player will experience the story of the twins as they learn the ways of nazi slaying and their own abilities as they attempt to topple the regime once again. The girls’ inexperience in killing makes the first few missions quite funny and they as characters are actually pretty cool. Wolfenstein has a unique ability to mix serious issues with comedy and Youngblood is no exception to that. The story is quite an important part of Youngblood and I feel as though it does a good enough job!

Youngblood is a co-op game that can be played with a real-life partner, or an AI controlled one. Owners of the deluxe edition of the game can invite one friend at a time to play the game free of charge meaning that you essentially get two copies for the price of one. This is an excellent feature and it allows players to experience the game to its full potential. Whilst playing the game with an AI is very much an option, it’s so much more fun to watch your mate slaying nazi’s alongside you and sharing the story together. I think the fact that the twins have a very obvious relationship makes sharing this with a friend feel so cool, its very wholesome. Looking at how the co-op design effects the gameplay, there are a lot of doors, boxes and areas that you can only access as a pair meaning that you have to link up quite often and really work together to progress. Both twins also have buffs they can apply to the other which is a really cool feature as even though you may be fighting a different enemy, your partner can still help. Its very obviously a co-op game and this really adds to the charm of it.

Overall then, Youngblood is a very fun, fast paced shooter with a solid story and cast. Yes, it maybe doesn’t quite have the same amount of depth as other Wolfenstein games, but it makes up for that in its fantastic value and very fun, co-op gameplay. This is a no brainer for any shooter fan, especially those who have a trusty duo’s partner from games like Fortnite or PUBG as it offers an intense shooter experience with some truly epic moments.
