Wreckfest is a game that has been a long time coming. It originally released in early access on Steam back in 2013 but now, six years later, we finally have a full release version on consoles! If you haven’t heard about the game before, it was developed by Bugbear Entertainment, the team that produced some of my favourite racers of all time, Flatout 2 and Ultimate Carnage. This game then was designed to sort of follow on from those iconic games and build upon some of the mechanics and features that made them so great. I have wanted to play this game since early access, so I’m thrilled to finally have a copy in my hands. So, after my first few sessions with Wreckfest, what am I thinking, keep scrolling to find out!
 
Booting the game you will be greeted with a nicely designed main menu which displays all of the modes available within the game. The menus feel great and have a simple look and feel which allows you to spend less time searching for what you are looking for and more time racing! Once you get into a race or Demolition Derby, youll instantly notice that sub 60 FPS frame rate. If you’re a long term reader, youll know my stance on that but fortunately, it doesn’t feel as bad as other sub 60 games I have played. Visually, the game looks decent and the amount of damage and crumple points you have on your vehicle is unlike any other racer I have played. You are pretty much able to screw your car up like a piece of paper should you crash it enough and that is awesome. I don’t understand why modern racers don’t have much in the way of damage physics, maybe its something to do with vehicle licensing? Anyway, moving onto vehicles, there seems to be quite a lot to choose from and a decent amount of upgrading too. You can also even add liveries and paint to your vehicle so in theory, there are a huge number of different combinations. Physics wise, I’m liking it so far. It does feel a bit like Flatout but I guess it also feels more modern and with the damage physics, racing feels pretty realistic. You do have that ability to lean on other racers but there are definitely limits and youll know when you cross them! My only gripe so far aside from FPS, comes in the form of race length, they all feel quite short. I’m hoping they will get a little longer the further I progress but I always loved those 8 minute races on Flatout back in the day! Overall then, things are looking good for Wreckfest!
