Yu-Gi-Oh Legacy of The Duelist Link Evolution Switch Review
| 2019-08-27

Yu-Gi-Oh is a series that I played and watched a lot of when I was younger. Some of my favourite games of the DS and PSP generation were Yu-Gi-Oh games and It’s for this reason that I was really excited to play Legacy of The Duelist (LOTD). There’s something about having a game that like LOTD on a handled device that I just love, maybe it’s because I love having a challenging strategy game in my bag with me at all times! So then, after about a week with the game, what are my thoughts? Let’s find out.

The Yu-Gi-Oh games I was used to before coming into LOTD were very different to this latest release in that that whilst they allowed you to play out a set story, you could do it your way, creating your own smaller stories within and using your own deck at all times. LOTD whilst still having a set story, bases itself off Yu-Gi-Oh Anime series’. This means that the game offers a not previously seen blend of the TV series and the games as you are able to rein act and complete pretty much every duel from each series. This is really cool as you get to use some insane decks containing cards you would never get you use IRL or even use your own if you fancy. I love this as whilst I watched pretty much all of the GX series, I have little to no experience with the remaining series’ so I’m also getting to learn the overarching stories as I go. Some of the duels you get to play are epic and it allows you to experience a load of cards and perfectly built decks that you just usually wouldn’t get to see. Whilst this series story approach is great, I do miss being able to wonder around, grinding for better decks and forming my own story as I used to in the likes of Spirit Caller and Tag Force so it is a bit of a trade off on that front.

Visually, the game looks exactly how I expected it would. Its sort of a modern take on the classic game’s interface and I rate it as it feels new but gives me some nostalgic feels at the same time. Animations are ok at best unfortunately, especially when an iconic monster is summoned. These summon animations feel very dated and I wish we got a proper, super high-quality animation for each big card but maybe that’s something we can look forward to next time around. Audio is decent and sounds similar to what I remember with some catchy tunes making the duelling experience feel even more exciting. The game runs well holding a silky smooth 60 FPS most of the time aside from a few hitches and let me say, Yu-Gi-Oh never felt so good! Honestly it feels like such a nice experience at 60FPS its honestly so nice.

Overall then, Yu-Gi-Oh LOTD is a solid title which will be perfect for fans of the Anime and the card game alike. The mix of generations within the game mean that fans who have joined at any stage of the series will feel right at home with plenty of familiar faces, cards and moments! I really like LOTD and it feels fantastic on the Switch. Whilst you can buy it on other platforms, why would you when you can take it with you on the Switch? It really is a solid game and I think it may have just tempted me to get back into Yu-Gi-Oh!
