Yu-Gi-Oh Legacy Of The Duellist Link Evolution Initial Thoughts
| 2019-08-21

As I'm sure many of you will know, I used to be very into Yu Gi Oh back in the day and some of my favourite games, especially on handhelds are Spirit Caller and Tag Force. We haven’t had a new handheld Yu Gi Oh game in years so when I saw that Legacy Of The Duellist was coming to Switch, I knew I had to play it. I should also mention that I haven’t played or know anything about Yu Gi Oh past the end of GX so this game should also give me a chance to catch up on the story! So then, after all this excitement, what did I think of my first session playing the game? lets find out! Check out our Live First play video below and keep scrolling for my initial thoughts:

Being someone who loved forging their own story, creating their own decks and rivalries in Spirit Caller and Tag Force, LOTD initially felt like uncharted water for me as whilst there is a story, it doesn’t work in the same way that It did in previous games. From what I've seen of it so far, you play set duels from the TV series, one particularly icon one features in our first play video. This new format fuses the tv series and games and I kind of like it. Aside from the story, animations, UI and art style all feel like Yu Gi Oh and coupled with the high resolution of the Switch when compared to PSP and DS, the experience feels really crisp and smooth so far. The tutorial was a little annoying as it guides you through every single little step and cannot be skipped but I guess if you are new to the series, this could be extremely helpful. Content wise there does seem to be an awful lot with 50+ duels from every generation of the game which is bound to keep me busy for a long, long while to come. Overall, so far, I’m quite impressed with what I have played. I’m looking forward to continuing playing, especially taking advantage of the Switch’s handheld mode to get some duels in on the go. Let me know what you think of the game if you have played it down in the comments below and head to the link at the foot of this article to get your copy. Our review should be live within the week so keep an eye out for that and as always, keep it ShopTo for all the latest gaming news, reviews, competitions and more!
