Rocket League – In Rotation
| 2019-08-13

Welcome to In Rotation, a series much like Revisited where I shine the spotlight on a specific game and highlight why I think you should be playing it. As opposed to discussing a game that I have come back to, I’m going to be looking at the games that make up my regular rotation. These are the games that I play several times a week and have been playing since their release. So then, this time around we are looking at Rocket League which is a title that everyone should own. I thought now would be a good time to discuss the game seen as its been in the media a lot recently after its dev studio Psyonix was acquired by Epic and more recently, it was announced that all loot boxes will be removed from the game by the end of the year. So then, just what keeps me coming back to Rocket League so often? Let’s find out. *Side note, enjoy the old school camera shake gameplay videos too!*

Rocket League is possibly my favourite game of this console generation. Whilst it might not receive the most frequent content updates and the core gameplay may be near enough exactly the same as the launch build, it really is the game that keeps on giving as players continue to experiment with the games engine and find new strategies that completely change the RL scene. From my humble beginnings, not knowing how to aerial and scoring long shots from the half way line with that hideous default camera angle, to scoring perfect rotation aerials and making saves I thought were impossible just a few years ago, my Rocket League career has been full of memorable experiences and not stop fun. The game is simple at heart, score against your opponent, but it’s the technique that is required to do so that makes it fun. The constant strive for progression and a very well designed Rank system make improving at the game feel extremely satisfying and this is what makes the game so replayable in my opinion. I also really enjoy knowing that if I concede a goal, its because me or my teammate made a mistake whereas in FIFA, there are so many scenarios where the game plays a major part in goals. This forces me and my duo’s partner to be hypercritical of our performances and look to training levels to try and improve further and prevent mistakes in the future.

I did mention earlier that the game doesn’t have the most frequent content updates but to be fair, since Psyonix were bought by Epic Games, we have had a long-term event running which has brought a lot of fun new content to the game. This Radical Summer event is the biggest in the games history and have provided three sets of grindable rewards, new crates and some new game modes, one of which I have become very good at. Beachball mode came with the 80’s TV update and entails standard RL rules, but with a super floaty and curvy beachball which completely changes the flow and mechanics of the game. This mode is unlike anything else we have had before as it doesn’t change the core objective or add ridiculous powerups. It’s a case of if you know how the mechanics work, you can be very good at this mode and that’s what we have become. I would say our win rate is probably 4 out of every five matches and we can often go through several opponents in a row. I absolutely love beachball and I hope to see the mode return soon as it is now unavailable within online playlists.

Rocket League is the second-place game within my rotation and I’m looking forward to its future as Epic look to add new and exciting content. I’m not sure how the removal of crates will work as of yet and I feel like that could be a very interesting process which could potentially be very beneficial for me as I have hundreds of unused crates left over from my trading days. So then, the game is in a great place at the moment and the future looks very bright for Rocket League. If you somehow haven’t played it before, I really encourage that you give it a go and I promise you won’t regret it as its such an amazing game.
