This time on Revisited, we take a look back at the game that I spent the majority of 2018 playing with my mates, Fortnite Battle Royale. With Epic Games hosting the biggest Esports event of all time over the weekend and Fortnite’s Season 10 content set to drop tomorrow, now feels like the perfect time to dive back into the game that took over the world. Before I discuss my thoughts on the state of the game today, lets me give a bit of backstory. I began playing Fortnite BR in September 2017 way before it went mainstream after looking for a less intense alternative to PUBG which I had recorded just two wins on at the time. Fortnite quickly became a staple game in my rotation and it allowed me to play a fun, easily accessible game with my mates that wouldn’t usually play shooters. I went onto record 70+ duos wins, 10+ solo wins (I never really played solo) and over 120 squads wins with 75% of those coming as a trio as apposed to a full squad of 4. I played the game pretty much daily until mid to late 2018 and then I began to fall out of love with the game and moved onto other BR’s such as Blackout and Apex. Upon returning to the game over the weekend, me and my main duo partner were sceptical of some of the changes and how we would perform as I hadn’t recorded a stat on the game in over 170 days and we both knew that the opponents skill levels have improved a lot. So after six months away from the game, what did I think upon my return? Lets find out.
Right off the bat, it was obvious that the competition had improved as we died early in our first game to a duo who’s level of ability would have been very rare back when I stopped playing properly. Their building ability was similar to that of PC players with fast edits and solid, quick builds, something that especially given my length of time away from the game, I could not replicate. Our second game saw us encounter a blatant hacker who was obviously playing with cheats on PC but matched up against us via cross play as he was using a controller. I believe it was our third game that saw us get our first win back but it just played out well and I believe I finished with 4 or 5 kills despite not knowing what most of the new weapons are or where the hell we were in this drastically different map. We went on to play probably around 4 more proper games, another of which we won so we probably ended 2 wins out of 8 which Is a record I would have very much taken before we started playing. So, we established that the competition has improved but perhaps not to the extent that we thought. We also gathered that we are still pretty damn good at the game and that maybe our skill was permanent!
