Gears 5 Initial Thoughts
| 2019-09-11

The biggest Xbox exclusive in recent years is here and it comes in the form of Gears 5! The game has been highly anticipated from pretty much all Xbox gamers as they yearn for a solid exclusive for their system and it looks like The Coalition have delivered! I should mention that I haven’t played any Gears games before so I was coming into this as a newcomer but I do obviously have a lot of shooter experience! SO then, after playing through the lengthy tutorial and completing the first mission, what are my thoughts on Gears 5, lets find out. Check out our Live First Play video below and continue scrolling for written thoughts:

The first thing that hit me was how complete and polished Gears 5 feels. It actually feels ready for release and it plays like an absolute dream with smooth 60 FPS gameplay and some really nice animations and visual effects which combine to make the experience feel extremely fluid. You can tell this is the fifth entry into the series as everything just feels so refined and perfected. I was honestly left questioning why I hadn’t played this game yet after experiencing the tutorial alone. Gears 5 looks fantastic with vibrant colours and amazing graphical detail. I immediately noticed how good the visuals are when I started playing, especially when compared to some of the other titles I have played recently, you can tell that a lot of work went into making Gears 5 look great and I bet it looks phenomenal in 4K. The game holds 60 FPS with no problem and all of this adds up to make Gears 5 an incredible shooter experience. Onto gameplay then, it took a little while for me to get used to the covering system but after the tutorial and a bit of campaign gameplay, I got to grips with this surprisingly intuitive system. There is a lot of gameplay elements to Gears 5 but somehow, the control scheme and interaction mechanics feel very simple and allow you to execute actions very easily which once again contributes positively to the overall experience. Moving onto actual gunplay, weapons feel great and I actually love how they behave. The game rewards accuracy and strategy when it comes to taking out opponents and it certainly doesn’t feel like a walk in the park, run of the mill keep shooting them until they die game. Each weapon I used felt distinctly different so switching weapons is an important, strategic element within the game which is pretty sweet. The story follows on from Gears 4 but you do get a very nice catch up cut scene at the start which does a decent job of filling you in with just what the heck is happening. It seems to be a decent story which I’m looking forward to finishing. Overall then, Gears 5 looks like a very full package with plenty of content to experience. What I have seen appears to be very refined and my experience as a whole was very positive. I would highly recommend that you all check out the game, even if you haven’t played Gears before.
