Pokémon Sword Initial Thoughts – It’s Finally Here!
| 2019-11-15

At long last, we finally have a traditional Pokémon RPG on the amazing system that is the Switch! Nintendo have been fairly secretive with a large portion of this game in the run up to launch so that has left me very excited to get exploring the new Galar region and discovering all the new Pokémon within the game! A lot of people have been fairly critical of the game before launch as it does suffer with a few problems that shouldn’t really be a thing in 2019 but having said this, the game did review well so I was still pretty optimistic coming into it. So then, after years of waiting and 30 minutes of playing, what are my thoughts on Gamefreak’s latest RPG? Lest find out! Continue scrolling for my written thoughts and check out the video below to see the game in action!

Before even opening the game case, things were off to a good start as the included Steelbook case which you get when ordering from ShopTo is really nice. It’s a solid, embossed case with some really nice artwork on the front. Whilst I actually think the Shield version looks a little better, the Sword one is still fantastic and if you care about exclusives, you should probably go from Sword anyway! So then, upon booting the game, you’re thrown straight into the traditional Pokémon story, being introduced to some new Pokémon and familiar faces within your hometown. You get to meet your best friend Hop and his brother who happens to be the Galar Region Champion so we’re obviously going to have to battle him at some point. You then go onto choose your starter and do a little exploring. That’s about as far as I have gotten, and I’m really impressed with what I've seen so far. The visuals aren’t BOTW good, but I like them and I’m excited to explore this seemingly beautiful new region. The popping in issue with characters and Pokémon at a distance is a little annoying but its hardly going to ruin your experience and fingers crossed that this is the biggest issue that the game has at the moment. Overall then, Pokémon Sword looks decent, plays well and feels like a traditional Pokémon game. I'm extremely excited too carry on playing over the weekend and our review should be out by the end of next week!
