Top 20 Best Selling Games Within the UK in 2018 Revealed
| 2019-01-03

As we take a break from our usual gaming chart series this week whilst we eagerly await the first chart of 2019, our source, UKIE has come out with a very interesting list of the top selling video games of 2018. Its no surprise which games are sat at the top but further down the list, you might find a few unexpected names on there. In this article then, we’re going to break down the top 5 games and then look at a few of the more surprising games on the list! So, without any further ado, lets take a look last years top 20!

First Place – FIFA 19 – 1.89 Million Units

This isn’t surprising at all as us brits are football mad and especially after the summer we just had with the World Cup, everyone wanted a piece of the best football game on the market, FIFA 19. We’ve already detailed how much we love this year’s game as it brought new modes, valuable updates and more to the table. The constant content within Ultimate Team has been keeping people coming back and its looking like there is still plenty to come from the game yet! You can read our review here and watch our coverage below

Second Place – Red Dead Redemption 2 – 1.75 Million

Rockstar’s western powerhouse came second place in those famously important ShopTo GOTY awards and its come second place yet again here by a decent margin. It’s the game that everyone needs to have, and it looks like a lot of people actually do have it! I'm sure it will continue to sell well into 2019 with further updates for Red Dead Online coming soon and im sure a price cut might be on the horizon when stores actually get it back in stock! Check out our GOTY coverage for Red Dead 2 here and check out our live first play below

Third Place – Call of Duty Black Ops 4 – 1.17 Million

A considerable gap between Red Dead 2 in second place and Black Ops 4 in third shows just how big those first two games were. Yes COD’s back again and the current game is a stellar one! With a bigger and better Zombies experience, an innovative yet familiar Multiplayer and of course, one of the best Battle Royales around in Blackout, its not difficult to see why so many people rushed out to pick up copies! We’re still loving it and its definitely going to receive a hefty amount of playing time over the summer! Check out our review here and watch some decent gameplay below too!

Fourth Place – Spider Man – 676K

Dropping way below the million mark as we move from third to fourth, the epic PS4 exclusive Spider Man is sitting pretty on a crazy number of sales for an exclusive! This action packed, heroic adventure went down a storm with fans of Marvel and gamers in general sharing their positive opinions all over social media. We really enjoyed our time with the game and it is definitely on our list of games to catch up on. Check out our review here and watch our live first play below

Fifth Place – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 458K

Not only a console exclusive but a new console at that! These sales numbers for a Switch title are very impressive showing how good of a year Nintendo had as sales of their innovative system continued to roll in all year. Perhaps even more impressive is that the game released in May 2017, yes this game has been out for nearly two years and it still made the top 5 list for 2018! Check out our full review here and give some content a watch below

1. FIFA 19 - 1,889,401 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 - 1,757,212 3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 - 1,172,855 4. Spider-Man - 676,621 5. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe - 458,675 6. Far Cry 5 - 434,133 7. Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy - 430,551 8. God of War - 399,395 9. Forza Horizon 4 - 392,960 10. FIFA 18 - 351,788 11. Grand Theft Auto V - 339,805 12. Spyro Reignited Trilogy - 333,725 13. Battlefield V - 313,100 14. Assassin's Creed Odyssey - 305,937 15. Super Smash Bros Ultimate - 284,155 16. Super Mario Odyssey - 240,710 17. Call of Duty: WWII - 230,576 18. Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu - 227,767 19. Shadow of the Tomb Raider - 226,125 20. Fallout 76 - 218,534

Looking at a few of the surprises then, GTA V selling 339K copies 5 years after release is still crazy to me. Its an incredible game but honestly, who doesn’t have a copy these days? Battlefield V with just 313K sales is a little low, I’m sure this will increase when its BR drops this year, I know ill definitely be hopping on for it! Crash and Spyro with over 760K sales between them shows that remasters can be hugely successful, hence why I guess we are getting CTR this year! Finally, Smash Bros Ultimate selling 284K units in just 3 weeks seems crazy to me given that its only on the Switch. It’s a great game and it subsequently won our Switch game of the year award! I’m sure it has a huge year ahead of it and I’ll definitely be playing more. There we have it then, what a great year for games with some impressive sales numbers.
